Aegate: The Belgian Experience

  • In October 2006, Aegate launched its patient safety service in Belgium in collaboration with L'Association Pharmaceutique Belge (APB), the professional pharmacy association representing 90% of independent pharmacies in Belgium.
  • The collaboration saw Belgium become the first country in the world to pioneer Aegate's patient safety service.
  • Aegate with the endorsement of the APB are currently rolling out the innovative service across Belgian pharmacies to ensure the authenticity of prescribed medicines.
  • APB now supports the Aegate service as "best practice for pharmacy"

Why Belgium?

  • All prescription pharmaceuticals are required to display a unique serialised number - a prerequisite of Aegate's service.
  • Belgian pharmacies have all the necessary information technology systems in place

How Does it Work in Belgium?

  • Aegate is working closely with the APB to ensure that the services provide significant benefits to this professional group
  • The collaboration gives APB access to specific areas of the secure system so they can directly input important product safety information such as recalls
  • Aegate has selected the major pharmacy software providers to integrate its authentication service into their pharmacy software systems. This means pharmacies experience a seamless fit with their existing dispensing processes that can be achieved with no additional cost to them.
  • All three parties utilising the service, namely the relevant individual pharmacist, the pharmaceutical company and the APB will be alerted should untoward issues be identified in the market, enabling pharmacies to provide better care for their patients and companies to respond quickly.
